Northeastern University - Incubator Space

Northeastern University London's start-up incubator is a dynamic, inspiring space designed to empower young entrepreneurs. This vibrant new hub, situated in the heart of the City, offers a one-of-a-kind environment for budding new businesses to grow.

Our mission was to overcome the challenges presented by low-ceilings and reduced natural light in the basement space, and create an environment that would attract the next generation of business leaders.

We knew it was essential to maximise light within the space, so we strategically placed feature lighting throughout to brighten the area and create a dynamic atmosphere. To combat the feeling of enclosure and connect users to the outdoors, we incorporated biophilic design principles. We utilised plants and natural textures to foster a sense of well-being and promote creativity.

We embraced the challenge of the low ceilings by incorporating bold curves on the AV walls, ceilings, and flooring. This design choice created a sense of flow and visual interest, softening the starkness of the basement environment.

The incubator offers a variety of workspace options to suit user needs, whether it's a dedicated team area, a personal desk, or a dynamic shared space. Entrepreneurs have access to a full-equipped boardroom, multiple meeting rooms, and the privacy of call pods to conduct business effectively.

The Roman Wall event space offers the perfect pitch setting to elevate young businesses. The space benefits from high-tech AV systems and moveable furniture items whilst overlooking the 1,800 year old Roman built London wall. The event space seamlessly adjoins the hub, creating a versatile environment for hosting a variety of functions.

A unique chainmail feature was installed, guiding users down the existing staircase. This added a touch of whimsy and visual intrigue, further enhancing the space's character.

Our scope of deliverables encompassed all aspects of the project, from M&E (mechanical and electrical) to furniture, joinery, feature lighting, planting, flooring, decoration, acoustics, and AV. This ensured a cohesive and functional space delivered on time and in budget.

The start-up incubator is more than just a workspace; it's a springboard for success. By combining strategic design with a focus on functionality and community, we've created an inspiring environment where entrepreneurs can thrive.
