Willis Towers Watson Lisbon

Creating a flagship office in the new Lisbon branch of the global solutions firm

International Collaboration

Having previously completed numerous projects across the UK for Willis Towers Watson we collaborated internationally for the first time, completing the full design of their brand new offices in Lisbon, Portugal.

After identifying two preferred buildings, one in central Lisbon and the other just outside of the city center, we completed design test fitting exercises on both sites before the decision was made to proceed with the 2,275sqm, nine storey central location.

The goal was to create a stimulating and vibrant work environment whilst maintaining Willis Towers Watson’s global branding. The space was to be versatile, offering a variety of spaces for staff to work from whether that collaboratively or individually. At the heart of the project however was the creation of a kitchen and breakout space. Acting as a focal point for the building, we created an impressive space that the company can both work and entertain from.

Strong link to Lisbon and its architecture in the design

It was important to incorporate a strong link to Lisbon and its architecture in the design. We achieved this by taking inspiration from the local vernacular, for example the accent floor finishes were specifically selected to reflect the cobbled pavements seen throughout the city.

Within the tea points the finishes were again informed by local materials, in this case tiling and ceramics. The use of domestic-style tiles within the kitchen gives a familiarity which is homely and welcoming. To ensure maximum flexibility the kitchen breakout space was designed so that all furniture in the space can be re-configured, which has allowed Willis Towers Watson to utilise the space for large scale events, such as their global annual meetings.

A consistent feature in the design was the application of timber slats used in several different ways throughout the building. We used the slats as screening to provide a barrier between work space and meeting areas but also to provide a form of zoning, indicating where a meeting or collaboration space is whilst aesthetically they added a richness to the overall scheme.

An environment that staff can be proud to call their own

“The opportunity to work with Willis Towers Watson on such an important and exciting project was a brilliant experience for our team. As locations go, creating a flagship office space in the heart of Lisbon is right up there.

Working collaboratively with the team in both in London & Portugal was certainly a major challenge dues to complexities of the building and the logistics of delivering the project on time and budget.

It was amazing to work with Willis Towers Watson to create both a unique & personalised space but an environment that staff can be proud to call their own”
